Lighting up history
Australia's oldest working theatre, Hobart's Theatre Royal is upgraded by the latest offering from Strand Lighting
Published: 5 August 2007
The Theatre Royal in Hobart has installed a Light Palette Live console from Strand Lighting.
The theatre was first built in 1834 to provide a permanent dramatic venue for the population of Hobart, Tasmania. At this time, Britain was regularly sending convicted criminals to endure the floggings of Botany Bay; stone carved by convicts is still present in the building's walls.
It has required refurbishing several times, notably following a significant fire in 1984. The theatre took advantage of more recent renovation work to improve and expand the control room. As part of this work, Bytecraft Entertainment, the Strand Lighting distributor in Australia, supplied a Light Palette Live console, greatly expanding the lighting possibilities on offer. Strand attributes ease of use and a very low learning curve as prominent selling points.
